C
CO₂
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a greenhouse gas that comes from both natural and human sources. Natural sources of CO₂ emissions include respiration, decomposition, and ocean release. Human-produced sources of CO₂ come from fertilizer, ethanol and cement production, deforestation and from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas.
C
Capture
CO₂ is captured through separation and purification processes, and then compressed and transported to a site where it can be used in other ways.
S
Storage
The CO₂, whether used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) or simply injected for storage, will be permanently stored deep underground in geological formations.
